Thembi Seete (born 25 March 1977) is a South African actress, model, and singer-songwriter best known as a former Kwaito group Boom Shaka member.

The media personality has had a long career in the entertainment industry. From 2020 to 2023, she portrayed Gladys in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora.

Early life

Thembi Seete was born on 25 March 1977 in Soweto, a township of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa.

Her father died in 2014. She lost her mother, Rebecca Seete, to a brain tumor in July 2021. Her uncle and aunt raised her in Sebokeng in the Vaal.

Career

Thembi Seete started as a lead vocalist and dancer of the kwaito group Boom Shaka in 1994.

The group performed five different shows on the day Nelson Mandela was inaugurated. They flew from one city to another, including Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Durban, and East London.

She performed at most of the Fifa fan-parks in the Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, and Rustenburg areas for the World Cup celebrations in 2010.

After the band broke up in 2000, Thembi started singing solo and acting. She landed a minor role in the 2000 film Hijack Stories and played Hazel in the SABC1 drama series Yizo Yizo. She sang the track Sure Ntombazana for the soundtrack to Yizo Yizo 2.

In 2002, she landed another role as Lerato in the SABC1 drama series Gaz’lam. She portrayed Pumla in the made-for-TV movie Crossing the Line in 2005.

The actress played the lead role of Nina Moloi in the SABC1 soccer drama series Zone 14 and appeared for four seasons. She made a guest starring appearance as the young kwaito legend Lily in an episode of the SABC1 drama series Mtunzini.com in 2006.

Thembi presented the music dance show Jika Majika from 2006 to 2012. In 2013, she was among the seven choirmasters for the Mzansi Magic reality competition Clash of the Choirs South Africa

In 2013, she hosted the Mzansi Magic game show Nguwe Na?, where singles compete to win a date. She made a guest appearance as a presenter at the 6th annual Crown Gospel Music Awards, aired live on SABC2 in November 2013.

She returned to host the second season of Mzansi Magic game show Nguwe Na? in 2014. She landed the role of a drug addict, Bongi, in the soap opera Rhythm City, making her debut in July 2015.

Thembi released her first solo album, Lollipop, in 2001. Her second album, Smatsatsa, has hit tracks like Shayi Zandla, Mphate Kahle, and Skwatta Kamp.

In 2022, she co-hosted the Mzansi Magic reality music competition Idols SA.

Kwaito icon Thembi Seete appeared in the second season of Showmax’s Adulting, playing a controversial role as Portia.

Personal Life

Thembi Seete and her ex-partner Bobo ‘Bo’ Seritsane were together for over ten years, and were engaged to be married in 2012.

Their wedding was delayed, and eventually they ended the relationship. She confirmed their split on her Massiv Metro radio show in 2017. She has a son, Dakalo, with businessman Collen Mashawana.
