Early Life
Jay Jody was bornPhologo Judah Mataboge on 1 July 1990 in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. He is the older brother of Lehlogonolo Ronald Mataboge, aka A-Reece. He knew about rap music in 1997 after his father began to play the rapper Tupac’s music.
Local rapper Jay Jody caught the rapper bug first before his younger brother. He then started rapping using the computer to produce and collect rap music.
Career
Rapper Jay Jody rose to fame as a part of the South African rap duo B3nchMarQ. He Jody has collaborated with his younger brother, A-Reece, on a joint album, Heaven Can Wait: The Narrow Door Vol. 1, in December 2021, a heartfelt tribute to their late father.
Jay started recording music professionally at 17 and has always been in groups, but he has always wanted to be a solo artist.
He released his debut project, Sunset Stories: A Mixtape, in 2022. The first tracks that were recorded for the mixtape were Don’t Beg For Love, Sundress, and Purple Palm Trees.
The mixtape, Sunset Stories, was released under the Revenge Club Records, a label founded by Jody, A-Reece, and Tkay 10Staxx.
Some of his songs include Indoor Interlude, The Confrontation, Fed Up, Bill Russell, and Automatic. He has collaborated with notable artists, from Una Rams, Blxckie to Marcus Harvey.
In January 2024, Jay released the album Release Form, available on streaming platforms such as YouTube Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Spotify.
Some of the album’s tracks include Hands Of Time, B!tch I’m Good, Rollin’ Loud In Quiet Places, Ginger Trill, and Out Of My Head.
He released his debut solo album SHINE O’CLOCK on 26 July 2024. Some of the tracks in the album include Shine, The Cool, Ole, Made it anyway, and Vamonos.
Personal Life
Rapper Jay Jody is married to his partner Tshidi. The duo had a lobola ceremony on 18 January 2025 and a white wedding the same year.
