Mbuso Khoza (born 20 July 1978) is a South African singer, actor, and producer best known for singing Amahubo and Afro-jazz.

He played Maphalala, the father of Nokubonga, in the drama series Umkhokha. He returned to the show in 2024 after leaving it twice. He composed, arranged, and performed tracks for the Umkhokha: The Curse album titled Wonk’ AmaJudiya.

Early Life

Mbuso Khoza was born on 20 July 1978 in the old town of Eshowe in Zululand. He started music at a young age and was deeply connected to his Zulu heritage. He is passionate about telling stories through songs.

Career

Khoza is a musical visionary known for his Afro-jazz and Amahubo singing. His lyrics are relatable to audiences of different backgrounds as they reflect life’s experiences.

He delivers his songs in his native Zulu tongue and has performed on many prestigious stages. He is committed to preserving and celebrating African musical traditions.

As a singer, he has collaborated with seasoned artists and has shown dedication to mentoring upcoming talents. He has worked with Black Coffee to produce distinct African music.

In November 2023, he released the album Ifa Lomkhono, produced by Nduduzo Makhathini.

Aside from music, Khoza is a cultural ambassador and educator. He promotes African music and heritage on the local and global scene. He is also a cultural practitioner, actor, and theatre producer, and appears on Umkhokha: The Curse.

He contributed behind the scenes to the production of the series Shaka: Ilembe and played Maphalala in the telenovela Umkhokha: The Curse. He contributed to the Ikhaya Lamajudiya Umkhokha The Curse Album and other soundtracks of the show.

Mbuso Khoza launched his podcast at Alou Lifestyle in Eshowe on Saturday, 20 July 2024. The inspiration came from many suggestions to start the podcast after he appeared on the Penuel Show.

Khoza is also a regular contributor to the midmorning show Jabulujule on Ukhozi FM. He is establishing an institution, Mbuso Khoza’s Institute, in his hometown to teach culture and heritage.

Mbuso is a nominee for Best Jazz Album at the Metro FM Music Awards. He travels the world for cultural events and concerts. He composed, arranged, and performed many tracks for the Umkhokha: The Curse’s album Wonk’ AmaJudiya.

Personal Life

Mbuso Khoza has a daughter, Alinde, who saved him when he almost attempted to take his life in 2018. He had battled depression and anxiety for over 30 years.

He survived an accident, which happened on his way to the shoot. A car hit him and sped off in eThekwini.
