Early Life
Lucky Somkhanda Gumbi was born in 1982 in Jozini, close to the Swaziland border. He grew up in Mtubatuba on the far north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
His father died when he was 3 years old, and his mother struggled to raise him and his siblings.
Career
Lucky Gumbi runs private businesses, including a construction company and coal transportation.
In November, he scored a reality show featuring his wives. They strive to maintain unique family values, business lives, and personal identity.
Lucky agreed to the polygamy-themed reality show The Gumbis, produced by Sean McCollet, on SABC1 (Channel 191 on DSTV) to inspire others. It airs at 6 PM on Saturdays and provides a different glimpse into the world of polygamy. Since then, his family has become one of South Africa’s most topical families.
Personal Life
Lucky Gumbi has three wives, Bayede Cebekhulu Gumbi (35), Nombuso Malinga Gumbi (29), and Zama Duma (22). He has taught them to treat each other like sisters. They have their own houses, cars, and businesses.
He met his first wife, Bayede, through a friend in 2016. They started dating the same year and married the same year.
At first, Bayede wanted them to be exclusive, but when their business grew, the pressure grew also. He then suggested that he marry another wife to assist her.
Gumbi later met his second wife, Nokuthula, at a mall in 2017 and married her in 2018. He paid R260,000 for Nokuthula’s bridal shower and married her in a glamorous wedding ceremony that cost R4 million.
He has taught his wife to be independent and run their construction companies. His wives knew about his keenness to have many wives before marrying him. As of 2020, he had four children.
Somkhanda made headlines after it was reported that he had found a third wife, Zama Duma (22), in 2025. Their traditional wedding, which is referred to as ‘umkhehlo’, has been the talk of the town.
Gumbi is 21 years older than his new wife Zama Duma, who graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with an LLB.
Gumbi owns a house in Richards Bay and another in Balito, 40km north of Durban, South Africa.
